Tatung, Kinpo-Teco to Vie for Taiwan's WiMAX Licenses
March 30, 2007
As Taiwan's government plans to mete out WiMAX licenses in 2007, new contenders emerged to bid for the six six-year licenses, three for each of the northern and southern regions of Taiwan. Consumer electronics maker Tatung announced earlier that it will establish a new unit, with a capital of NT$100 million (US$3 million; US$1 = NT$33.1), to bid for the license. Tatung has not yet disclosed whether it will seek alliances or bid for the license as a standalone operator.

Meanwhile, Kinpo Group, the parent company of Vibo Telecom, plans to form a joint venture with TECO Group in pursuit of the WiMAX license. The new company is expected to have a capital of more than NT$10 billion (US$302.5 million; US$1 = NT$33.1). The Kinpo-TECO joint venture aims to vie for the WiMAX broadband service license in northern Taiwan.
